Past: The Anti-Unification League was originally a political movement at a grass roots level to stop the steady move towards globalization and a one world government.  When it became apparent that this tactic was not working and that most of the world was going to accept a united world government.  the organization changed tactics.  they continued to have the political movement opposing the formalization of a one world, one government model as well as stepping up local demonstrations and terrorist activities.  Not large enough of a movement to actually stop the inevitable, it still was able to cause much damage.

Present: Far more organized a young leader made sweeping changes to the group and it has flourished.  Some of the reasons for this is the fact that the current system of totalitarianism is not working that well.  With many cities forming their own governments after the first Robotech war.  It has made it easier to combat the one world, one government model that existed before the first Robotech war.  The fact that the new leader is very ruthless and dynamic doesn't hurt.  The organization still uses the same tactics as before.

The new leader also brought the ability to build mecha and larger ships and probably was the reason for his quick rise in power within this organization.  He was able to find a lost Zentradi super mecha factory, moving it to the asteroid belt past mars in secret.  He quickly built up a large armada.  When the RDF sent one of their newest weapons to try to find the fabled mecha factories, they were unable and eventually disappeared.  It is suspected that the AUL ship yards is turning out thousands of hardware a year.

Not much is known about the new leader of the AUL, but it is suspected that Chaos has either taken over himself or placed one of his lieutenants in the position.  Either way, it explains why they are able to field fairly large fleets of ships and men.
