The city has had a number of incarnations.  Starting off on an island where the SDF-1 crashed landed in 1999.  The city seemed to grow up over night as technicians, scientists and soldiers moved on to the small island to study and rebuild the space ship.

Later when the SDF-1 did an emergency space fold the energy bubble that formed around the space ship also engulfed the city and most of the Island.  The result being that the island and all on it, ended up in space near Pluto.

At that point the city was moved onto the SDF-1 and that became the second existence of the city.  A few of the people decided they wanted to leave and make a space station out near Pluto.  They took enough resources to make the station self sufficient.  The space station became the 3rd establishment of Macross and is the only one left.  Also it kept secrete from earth until General Fastrax discovered it

When the SDF-1 finally made it back to earth a city was established around the spot where the ship landed.  The population decided to call it Macross as well.  In the end, Kyron the Insane destroyed the city on Christmas eve with many exploding Santa's.  Then using the diversion he crashes his ship into the hulk of the SDF-1 and the newly built SDF-1, destroying both of them.

After that Macross was uninhabitable and so abandoned.
