Robotech Expeditionary Force.

It's original mission was to go out into the universe and find the Masters.  the hope was to convince them that humanity was not a threat and really wanted peace.  That mission changed when Kyron the insane attacked the SDF-2, destroying it and Macross city.  in the end the mission was revamped to also include setting up colonies thought the solar system and beyond.  So colonies where set up on mars and Saturn before leaving the solar system.

After they left the solar system contact was lost.  The assumption is that the time that it takes for any communications to get back to earth would be astronomical.  The hope is that they will send regular updates back to earth by folding a ship back every so often.

The mission took some of the brightest of the first Robotech war, along with most of the updated mecha.
